De Kai is Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at HKUST, and Distinguished Research Scholar at Berkeley’s International Computer Science Institute. He is among only 17 scientists worldwide named by the Association for Computational Linguistics as a Founding ACL Fellow, for his pioneering contributions to machine translation and machine learning foundations of systems like the Google/Yahoo/Microsoft translators.

Recruited as founding faculty of HKUST directly from UC Berkeley, where his PhD thesis was one of the first to spur the paradigm shift toward machine learning based natural language processing technologies, he founded HKUST’s internationally funded Human Language Technology Center which launched the world’s first web translator over twenty years ago.

➡ China vaccinates the most globally – already vaccinated 333 million at home plus 240 million in other countries
➡ China exports Covid19 vaccines to over 100 countries. Ships more vaccines than the whole world combined. 53% of vaccines in Latin America are Chinese
➡ Germany’s BioNTech and Fosun Pharmaceutical to form 50/50 JV and produce 1 Billion mRNA Covid vaccines in China
➡ World Health Organization (WHO) approved China’s Sinopharm vaccine for emergency use
➡ India to receive USD 1 million and additional oxygen concentrators, ventilators and other medical supplies donation from China’s Red Cross Society to help fight Covid19 outbreak
